On-The-Ground in Burma: Issue #7

This is the US Campaign for Burma’s seventh monthly On-The-Ground in Burma briefer! This month’s briefer will focus on U.S. and international response in the six months since the February 1st coup. Also included in the discussion is the need to recognize the Rohingya genocide as genocide as well as targeted sanctions.

This month’s briefer includes:

  • August highlights
  • U.S. and international response to the coup
  • The need to recognize the Rohingya Genocide
  • Four major policy recommendations
  • A story from a Rohingya Refugee
  • An overview of IDP issues and rights abuses in each ethnic state

As the conflict escalates in Myanmar between the militias, local armed groups, and the military, so has violence and rights deprivations of those in ethnic regions. Further, an added burden of the pandemic has left the already insufficient IDP camps facing an even more dire humanitarian crisis. The Tatmadaw feels comfortable attacking these areas because they are far from the prying eyes of the international media. This briefer intends to bring to attention the plight of these minorities at the hands of the junta.
