On-The-Ground in Burma: Issue #5

This is the US Campaign for Burma’s fifth monthly On-The-Ground in Burma briefer! This month’s briefer will focus on the ongoing situations between armed groups formed in ethnic states and the junta troops, the atrocities the latter is unleashing, as well as its effects on local civilians. Also included are discussions on inhumane torture methods used by the military regime, the need for NUG recognition, and current CDM situations, but concentrates more on analyzing the increased number of IDPs and issues in ethnic states.

This month’s briefer includes:

  • An analysis on what’s in store for ethnic states, usage of torture, humanitarian crisis, the path to NUG recognition, and impacts of CDM.
  • Six major policy recommendations
  • A story from a Kachin IDP
  • An overview of IDP issues and rights abuses in each ethnic state

As the conflict escalates in Myanmar between the militias, local armed groups, and the military, so has violence and rights deprivations of those in ethnic regions. The Tatmadaw feels comfortable attacking these areas because they are far from the prying eyes of the international media. This briefer intends to bring to attention the plight of these minorities at the hands of the junta.
